March is a prime time for watching the big old things teach their newly born young ones how to be whales and the Sands is the perfect place to do it at as the waters between the islands of Maui and Lana'i are a favorite hangout for the mothers and their babies. You are bidding on a 7 night stay at the world famous Sands Of Kahana resort on the island of Maui.The already reserved dates are: check in WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 2009 and check out WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 2009 (7 nights). I usually reserve Wed to Wed as those are usually less expensive days to fly. With the recent increases in airfare one must try to save wherever one can.Your unit will be a spacious (about 2,200 sq ft) 3 bedroom 2 bath condo with 2 lanais and a very nice large kitchen.The vacation club at the Sands (SOKVC) has three view categories that their members' week could be in. These are OCEAN FRONT, OCEAN VIEW AND GARDEN/MOUNTAIN VIEW and they rotate year by year. The week that is listed for rent here is scheduled to be in the GARDEN/MOUNTAIN VIEW category this time around. Depending upon which building the unit is in, some of the 3 bedroom GARDEN/MOUNTAIN VIEW units actually have some view of the ocean, just not enough to be in one of the other categories. As the actual unit to be issued is not determined by the SOKVC until about a week before arrival there is no way to know in advance if this week will be in a unit that will have any view of the ocean. I have already requested a 4th floor or higher unit. If the winning bidder is familiar with the Sands or has a general preference as to being on a higher or lower floor I can request a specific unit number within the GARDEN/MOUNTAIN VIEW category or a particular favorite building (there are four buildings) or a higher or lower floor but there is no guarantee that the SOKVC will honor any particular request. What I can say is that the SOKVC gives the better units in each view category to owners and their guests (the auction winner would be my guest) rather than to exchange guests booked through Interval International or RCI. So this can be a good thing.The auction winner will receive a confirmation letter from the SOKVC with their name added on as an additional user. It usually takes the SOKVC a month or more to issue a new confirmation letter with the changes made so do not be in a rush. The winner's name will be added to the reservation when the payment clears. I will mail the confirmation letter to the auction winner after I receive it from the SOKVC.There are no extra fees to be paid except any phone charges that are incurred during your stay. A credit card will need to be presented at check-in to cover such charges and will be used to cover any damages to the unit in the unlikely event such should occur.The SANDS OF KAHANA is a multi use complex. There are timeshare units, such as the 1 week rental listed here, and there are units that are lived in year around and there are units that are rented out by the owners through various rental companies or directly by themselves. If you go to the Sullivan Realty website at www.sands-of-kahana.com you can get some idea of what a 3 bedroom unit would rent for if they had one in what they refer to as the VALUE VIEW category. After going to their website click on "affordable rates" then click on "check availability" and select the Sands from the "complex" dropdown window and then enter the date and size of unit. Looking at the results you will see a price of about $3,100 to $3,500 for ocean view, ocean front or penthouse units after the taxes and such are added in. If they had a garden view unit in their rental program it might be $500 cheaper than an ocean front or ocean view. The bottom line is that you would likely spend at least $2500 for the week if you rented it from them. As you can see, my BUY IT NOW price of $1800.00 for the week is just $257.14 total per night and represents a big savings over a regular rental. The BUY IT NOW price is not that much higher than the starting price so you might consider using that feature if you do not want someone else to beat you to this good deal.FYI, with the recent increases in the Maui County property tax for timeshare units and the idiotic land purchase loan the homeowners association recently entered into, the yearly total assessments for a 3 bedroom timeshare week are now about $1,900.00 so renting it out for $1,600 to $1,800 is actually losing money. As recently as five years ago the total assessments for a 3 bedroom week were only about $1,100 which was affordable. If you are looking to buy a timeshare, don't buy one on Maui as the county is out to gouge timeshare owners.Payment may be made by check, money order or PayPal.
